General Trailer Servicing

Why It Matters and What It Involves
Small trailers, such as utility trailers, fridge trailers, horse box trailers, and boat trailers, are often taken for granted. They’re simple and usually reliable, which is exactly why regular servicing is easy to overlook. However, routine maintenance is essential for safety, longevity, and trouble-free towing. A well-maintained trailer not only protects your cargo but also prevents breakdowns and costly repairs down the road.
Why Regular Trailer Servicing Is Important
Unlike vehicles, trailers don’t have engines to signal problems early. Issues often go unnoticed until something fails on the road or during a heavy load. Regular servicing helps identify wear and tear early, keeps the trailer road-legal, and ensures safe operation. It also extends the lifespan of key components such as bearings, tyres, brakes, and suspension.
What To Look Out For

Wheel Bearings
Wheel bearings are one of the most critical components on any trailer. They should be cleaned, inspected, and re-greased regularly. Worn or dry bearings can overheat and seize, potentially causing wheel loss. For boat trailers, bearing maintenance is especially important due to water exposure.

Tyres and Wheels
Trailer tyres should be checked for tread depth, cracking, uneven wear, and correct pressure. Underinflated or aged tyres are a common cause of blowouts. Don’t forget to inspect wheel nuts and the spare tyre as part of routine servicing.

Brakes (If Fitted)
Braked trailers require periodic inspection of brake pads, shoes, cables, drums, or discs. Brake adjustment ensures even stopping and prevents premature wear. Hydraulic or electric brake systems should also be checked for leaks, corrosion, or faulty wiring.

Lights and Wiring
Faulty trailer lights are both dangerous and illegal. Servicing includes checking indicators, brake lights, taillights, and number plate lights, as well as inspecting wiring for damage or corrosion. A clean plug connection ensures reliable electrical performance.

Suspension and Axles
Springs, shackles, bushes, and axles should be checked for cracks, sagging, or excessive wear. A failing suspension system can affect handling, tyre wear, and load stability.

Coupling and Safety Chains
The tow coupling must be secure, correctly adjusted, and free from excessive wear. Safety chains should be properly rated, undamaged, and securely attached. These components are vital for safe towing and legal compliance.

How Often Should a Trailer Be Serviced?

For most small trailers, a general service is recommended at least once a year or every 10,000 miles whichever comes first. Trailers used frequently, under heavy loads, or in harsh environments (such as saltwater use) may require more frequent.

Fridge and Freezer Trailer Servicing

Fridge and freezer trailers are the backbone of temperature-controlled logistics, ensuring that perishable goods reach their destination in perfect condition. For businesses that rely on consistent refrigeration performance, keeping trailers in optimal working order is essential. At Coldtraila, we specialise in comprehensive fridge trailer repairs, servicing, and modifications designed to maximise reliability, efficiency, and lifespan.

The Importance of Regular Fridge Trailer Servicing

Routine servicing is the first line of defence against costly breakdowns and product loss. Refrigeration units operate under demanding conditions, often running continuously for long periods. Over time, wear and tear can reduce efficiency and lead to unexpected failures.

A professional service typically includes:

  • Inspection of refrigeration units and compressors

  • Checking refrigerant levels and detecting leaks

  • Testing electrical systems and control panels

  • Cleaning condensers and evaporators

  • Assessing door seals and insulation integrity

By scheduling regular maintenance, operators can reduce downtime, improve fuel efficiency, and ensure compliance with food safety and transport regulations.

Expert Repairs When You Need Them Most

Even with the best maintenance schedule, issues can still arise. When they do, fast and effective repairs are critical.

Common fridge trailer problems include:

  • Temperature fluctuations or failure to maintain set points

  • Faulty compressors or fan motors

  • Electrical malfunctions

  • Damaged insulation or door seals

  • Refrigerant leaks

Our repair approach is focused on rapid diagnostics and durable solutions. Our technicians have experience with a wide range of refrigeration systems and trailer types, allowing them to identify faults quickly and carry out repairs that last.

We understand that every hour off the road impacts your business, which is why we prioritise efficient turnaround times without compromising on quality.

Compliance and Safety You Can Trust

Operating fridge trailers involves strict compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards. Proper servicing and repair work ensures that your equipment meets all relevant regulations, helping you avoid fines, protect your cargo, and maintain your reputation.
Our team stays up to date with industry standards and best practices, ensuring every service, repair, or modification is carried out to the highest level of compliance.

Fridge unit removal and refit

Removing and Fitting Govi Monoblock Fridge Units on Fridge Trailers

Govi Monoblock Refrigeration Units are widely used on fridge and freezer trailers due to their compact design, reliability, and ease of installation. Correct removal and refitting is essential to maintain performance, ensure food safety, and avoid damage to both the unit and the trailer structure.

Preparation and Safety
Before any work begins, the trailer will be parked on level ground with the electrical supply isolated. The unit will then be disconnected from mains or generator power and confirm that no live circuits remain. Caution must be taken as monoblock units are heavy and awkward to handle. We will always check the unit’s data plate and installation manual, as Govi models vary in weight, fixing method, and electrical requirements.

Removing the Monoblock Unit
Removal starts from inside the trailer. The internal evaporator section is typically secured with silicone around the cut-out panel. The silicone will be cut evenly to prevent distortion of the wall panel.

Once the internal silicone fixing is removed, we remove the four external fixing bolts that are positioned in the two top corners and two lower corners on the Govi unit, we then support the external condenser section before pulling the unit free. Monoblock units pass through the trailer wall as a single assembly, so care is taken to avoid damaging insulation, seals, or the wall aperture. The unit will be lifted clear using suitable lifting equipment or a second technician. Manual handling alone is not recommended.

After removal, we inspect the aperture for corrosion, damaged insulation, or worn seals, and repair as required before refitting or installing a replacement unit.

Fitting the Govi Monoblock Unit
When we fit a unit, we ensure the wall aperture is clean, square, and correctly sized for the specific Govi model. New sealing gaskets or food-grade sealant should be used to prevent air and moisture ingress.

The unit is inserted from the outside, with the evaporator section passing through into the trailer body. Once aligned, the external retaining frame or bolts are tightened gradually and evenly to create a uniform seal without crushing the panel.

Electrical connections will be made according to the manufacturer’s wiring diagram, ensuring correct voltage, earthing, and circuit protection. Any control panels or temperature probes will be securely mounted and protected from damage.

Testing and Commissioning
After installation,  we restore power and run the unit to confirm correct operation. Check airflow, listen for abnormal noise or vibration, and verify that the unit pulls down to temperature within the expected time.

Finally, we inspect all seals for air leaks and confirm the trailer interior remains hygienic and easy to clean.

Correct removal and fitting of Govi monoblock fridge units not only extend equipment life but also ensure reliable temperature control and compliance with refrigerated transport standards.
