Top Tips for Organising Your Wedding Catering

Weddings are notorious for requiring a lot of preparation – from booking the venue and choosing the perfect wedding dress, to organising transport for the big day. The catering is one of the most essential things to get right – as you’ll no doubt have hungry guests following the ceremony. From establishing guest numbers to choosing the dish options and catering for dietary requirements, there is plenty to consider.

Choosing the menu options will, most likely, be one of the more fun yet time consuming aspects of the wedding preparation. From choosing your ideal caterer to attending tasting sessions, there are numerous steps involved. You’ll also need to consider whether you’ll hold your reception outdoors or indoors, and what your chosen venue will allow for.

BBQs and hog roasts are always popular choices for outdoor receptions; alternatively, mobile caterers might be more suitable for receptions held at home. It’s also important to decide whether you want guests to serve themselves from buffets/food stations, or whether you’d like your guests to experience a three-course meal. A good caterer will help you decide on these options, providing advice tailored to your ideal reception.

The bride and groom should, of course, consider their personal preferences and the requirements of their guests when deciding on menu options. However, it’s also a good idea to consider current trends – especially if you’re stuck for ideas. Fish-based starters have been popular options, in addition to homemade soup.

Additionally, those who opt for an autumn/winter wedding tend to go for heartier dishes, whilst those holding summer weddings opt for lighter dishes – and, more commonly, outdoor BBQs. Alternatively, if you have a dish in mind that you’d particularly like to include, or your caterer has a speciality dish, it’s always a good idea to serve this as the second course – after all, it is the main event! Roast chicken, steak and unusual meats (such as venison) are also great ideas for main courses, as they are popular choices in many British homes.

The dessert is, undoubtedly, a course which many people look forward to – so it’s important that this is considered equally as much as the other courses! Miniature dessert trios are extremely popular and a fashionable choice at weddings, since they provide an array of different flavours – and cater to a wide range of tastes. You may choose to incorporate three contrasting desserts, or choose a dish that has complementing flavours throughout – such as a chocolate brownie, coffee tiramisu and berry trifle. Alternatively, you may wish to opt for more traditional desserts, such as a sticky toffee pudding, or a melt-in-the-middle chocolate pudding.

Having a running theme throughout your menu is a great idea, and adds an element of fun. Whether it’s an outdoor picnic theme or an ‘around the world’ theme, it will appear as though you’ve put much more effort into the menu choices.
